Margaret Hamilton

Margaret Hamilton is recognized as the first software engineer, a term that she coined herself. She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Earlham College in 1958 and began working for MIT in 1959, creating software for predicting weather patterns. Hamilton was employed by NASA in 1965 as the lead designer for Apollo 11's guidance computer. She worked with a team of programmers to write the program for Apollo 11's guidance computer, which sucessfully sent humans to the moon. This was a result of years of hard work by Hamilton and her colleagues, who created a "priority display" for Apollo's guidance system that identified errors and displayed them in real time.
